LIGHTHOUSE

Location:  INDOOR
Minutes:  5-15
Formation  CIRCLE
Activity Level LOW
Age levels ANY
People 10-20
Supplies NONE

Instructions:  Have your group sit in a circle and join hands.  Explain that the electricity it takes to run the lighthouse comes from a generator and you will be the generator to demonstrate the game to the group.  The generator can pass electrical current to either the left or right by gently squeezing the person's hand you are holding.  This current gets passed around the circle.  Next explain that each lighthouse has a sound to help sailors hear where the lighthouse is when it is very foggy.  Pick someone on the opposite side of the circle to be this sound.  That person will let out a Beep or Ding every time they feel either hand being squeezed.  So, now try this: generator sends a squeeze current to your left - when it gets to the lighthouse person dinging it STOPS there and the lighthouse lets out it's Beep or Ding or whatever noise.  Send the current to the right - again it STOPS at the lighthouse the current should never run through the lighthouse and out the other side!!.  Choose one person to leave the room and remove a chair from the circle.  Pick one person to be the lighthouse and one person to be the generator.  Practice sending the current; now, ask It to come into the middle of the circle.  It gets three guesses to determine who is being the generator.  Send someone new out and begin again with a new generator and new lighthouse.

Leader's Hints:  The lighthouse and generator do not have to be opposite each other in the circle - they can be one away from each other or even right next to each other.  The generator does try to send the current when It has his or her back to him or her.
